Genetic diseases
Recent health reports indicate that hereditary diseases in dogs are growing to alarming proportions all over the world. "There are more than 300 identified genetic diseases in dogs and, to date, only about 15 DNA-based genetic tests are available", says Dr. Gustavo D. Aguire, UMD from Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine.
According to Mike Herrtage, MRCU of Queen's Veterinary School Hospital in Cambridge, "Hereditary diseases are mainly the result of inbreeding pedigree dogs and the breeding of show dogs that carry recessive genes, which, at present, are unable to be recognized".
