undercoat in Portuguese Water Dogs: UNDESIRED
Alarming news have been reported from England,
America and North Europe about PWDs with double coat.
Reported, also the explanation, that those ignorant and unconscious
breeders tell the unaware:
"PWDs that grow up in cold climate produce underwool. PWDs
that are outside get more wool than those that are inside."
Further they say: "Undercoat is not a genetic fault as it is
better for the dogs, so that they will not freeze too much..."
They also affirm: "Some type of dog food can give PWDs more
underwool."
UNTYPICAL
The presence of undercoat in PWDs is to be
considered a serious fault and is to be discouraged. Pure PWDs
have single coat - dense and long (wavy & curly).
We know that climate (thousand of years), due to mutation, has provided
adaptation to dogs, that have remained exclusively outside under extreme
conditions, for all-weather protectress. This is the case of
herding dogs and Nordic dogs, among others.
Interesting to note that PWDs have only recently lived in cold climates
but are kept in he house as pets/show dogs or in sheds as in puppy
mills.
Also to note that all other waterdogs as the American Waterdog, the
Irish Waterdog, the Spanish Waterdog and the French Barbet have single
coat.
DANGEROUS
Pure bred or mongrel - faults such as
undercoat, black & tan, brindle, particolor show mongrelisation of a breed that
has kept, for centuries, the true qualities of our wonderful and unique
PORTUGUESE WATER DOG.
